Although you might not have ever heard of them, elevated toilet seats have been used for some time now. In case you can’t guess from the name, an elevated toilet seat (also known as a raised toilet seat) is basically a toilet seat that has been raised up so that it sits a bit higher than normal. There are many reasons for why one might use one of these, which I’ll go into.
So who might use an elevated toilet seat? The main users of them are people who have problems sitting down on the toilet without assistance. These might be elderly people, people with some kind of a disability or simply those with some kind of joint pain.
Currently in the USA alone, there are over 30 million reported cases of arthritis. Although not all of these cases will affect the joints necessary to sit down, it is certainly a worrying statistic. If you are one of the unlucky people suffering, you might find it extremely difficult (or even painful) to sit down on a normal toilet, so using a elevated toilet seat is often the answer.
Now, it’s worth noting that there are many different kinds of elevated toilets that you can buy (such as a hinged elevated toilet seat or ones with handles). For those with mobility problems, you might be better off using elevated toilet seat with handles so that there is something extra to grab onto for when you’re trying to sit down and stand up again. Obviously everyone is different, and the problems they have will be different, so it’s important to get the one that suits your needs best.
Before buying any kind of raised toilet seat there are a few things that you should first think about. First of all, you should check the weight limit of the seat you’re looking at. Although most seats are pretty sturdy and can take a lot of weight, it’s better to be safe than sorry, since you will be putting a different kind of strain on the hinges.
After you’ve worked out what kind of elevated toilet seat you need, you should try to find one that’ll sit at the correct height for you. Finding out how high up you need it can be difficult, especially as you’ll need to take into account the main base of your toilet when doing your calculations. Although this can be difficult to work out, it is perhaps the most important part and should not be skipped.
