In some situations, your bathroom can be an extremely dangerous place to be. Slippery floors and an abundance of water make for a potentially hazardous environment. Shower grab bars (also known as bathroom grab bars) are basically handles that you fit onto the inside of your shower (or bathtub) that give you something to hold onto. Typically, they’re screwed into the wall at the corners, so that you have two shower grab bars placed at a perpendicular angle to one another.
So who are shower grab bars made for? They’re primarily made for anyone that might have problems standing for an extended period of time (such as the elderly or the disabled). For the handicap shower grab bars are a real blessing. Not being able to take a shower by yourself can be a real blow to your confidence, since it’s never nice to have to rely solely on another person for such a basic act.
When taking a shower, shower grab bars allow you to stand up for an extended length of time because you’ve got something sturdy to hold onto. By being able to hold onto a shower grab bar you can shower in safety and comfort.
When having them installed, it’s vitally important that you get it done right. Jobs like this must be done properly, since having badly installed shower grab bars could be extremely dangerous (imagine if they were to come out of the wall while you were supporting yourself on them!)
In addition to this, I’d recommend that you use at least 2-3 grab bars in your bath or shower (depending on the layout). Any less and you won’t have enough to hold onto.
As well as bathtub grab bars one might also want to look at getting a disabled shower seat or one of the many shower benches available. The most popular type on the market at the moment is the teak shower seat. If you’re running short on space, you might also want to consider getting a folding shower chair.
